First steps
- Don't force it: don't push the piece further in, and don't insert the other half of the key to "push" it.
- Don't turn anything else: leave the cylinder in its current position.
- Lubricate: a little silicone release spray (not thick oil) makes removal easier.
How to remove the broken piece
If part of the blade is sticking out, grip it with fine pliers (tweezers or needle-nose pliers) and pull it straight out. If nothing is sticking out, a key extractor (a serrated blade slid along the broken piece) is the right tool. A fine saw blade can also do the job.
| Situation | Action |
|---|---|
| The piece is sticking out | Fine pliers + release spray, pull straight |
| Nothing is sticking out | Key extractor, without forcing |
| High-security cylinder / piece jammed | Call a locksmith: avoid breaking the cylinder |
When to call a locksmith
With a high-security cylinder, or if the piece is deep inside and stuck, it's best not to persist: the wrong move can break the cylinder (a more costly repair). We remove the key and, if necessary, replace the cylinder.
Afterwards: getting a new key cut
Once the piece has been removed, we copy your original key (see key types and key copying). If the cylinder has been damaged, it's a good opportunity to upgrade to a more secure model: see our buying guide.
