The different types of keys and how to recognise them

Flat, lever, tubular, patented… How to tell which type of key you have and where to get it copied. A clear guide from Cléferm, specialist locksmith since 2002.

How can I tell what type of key I have?

Three clues are usually enough:

  • The shape: flat and thin = pin tumbler key; thick with a wide bit = lever key; round and hollow = tubular key.
  • The markings: a brand name (BKS, Vachette, ABUS, DOM, ISEO…) and a number indicate a patented key, copied with the key registration card.
  • The number of points: a long key with several rows of dimples often belongs to a multipoint security door lock.

Not sure? Send a photo of your key to clf@cleferm.fr or call 01 47 21 21 38, and we will identify it for you.

Where to get each type of key copied

Cléferm copies all of these keys at its Chatou workshop: flat keys copied in the workshop, lever and tubular keys cut on site, and patented keys ordered from the manufacturer with the key registration card. See our key duplication service. For a house key in particular, we guide you step by step.
